DescriptionDescription:
This course investigates how trauma impacts people’s internal and external rhythms. Trauma alters how the brain processes information and how the human organism interacts with the outside environment. Traumatized persons continue to react in a variety of ways to present experience as a repeat of the past due to biological systems that are changed in a use-dependent manner. We will investigate the neuroscience of self-regulation as well as methods of loving one’s body, both of which are necessary for the integration of traumatic memories: feelings, behavior patterns, and bodily sensations from the past. Because most experience is processed automatically on subcortical, or unconscious, levels in the brain, awareness and knowledge have only a limited impact on people’s control over these processes. We will discuss our clinical experiences and studies with EMDR, yoga, theater work, and neurofeedback, as well as the effectiveness of these diverse modalities in assisting individuals to overcome a traumatic past and reclaim the capacity to be completely alive in the present.
Objectives of Education:
Describe contemporary advances in neuroscience as they pertain to PTSD therapy.
Demonstrate physical mastery, emotion management, concentration, and memory processing techniques.
Explain how experience and regulated body activity, both individually and in groups, may be extremely effective in overcoming traumatic repetitions and ongoing fight/flight/freeze reactions.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*
