Date of the original program: December 11, 2013 DescriptionDescription:
Why does a therapist have to tell an adult that he or she no longer has to feel or act like a helpless child? Why does someone treat a new boyfriend or girlfriend cruelly, as if he or she is the same person who injured him or her before? One solution is to think globally. Most individuals, including therapists, are global thinkers, or persons who “see the forest but not the trees.” Global thinking is strongly linked to both depression and PTSD. It’s also a foundation for improper therapeutic recommendations. What are the many varieties of global thinking, and what can therapists do to treat this cognitive style? In this workshop, we will look at the role of global thinking in a variety of symptom presentations, do a practice exercise in developing and teaching discrimination criteria, and emphasize the importance of teaching concrete and specific skills in making distinctions that lead to better decisions and, ultimately, better mental health.
Objectives of Education:
Describe how global cognition plays a role in a range of presenting difficulties.
Create important discrimination tactics for better decision-making.
Apply specificity patterns to the process of advising and directing treatment clients.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*
