Like bagua (ba gua, pakua) and tai chi, hsing-i chuan (Xing yi quan, Shing yi chuan) is an internal martial technique. Each of the three internal combat arts has its own specific taste and qualities.
Hsing-i is the most direct and yang practice of the internal martial arts, consisting mostly of five fundamental fist moves and a core standing exercise known as Santi.
This DVD training set was shot live in Berkeley, California, and it covers the principles of both San Ti—the main standing stance of hsing-i—and Pi Chuan, also known as Chopping Fist.
San Ti, or the trinity position, is central to the practice of hsing-i and its Five Elements. A frequent narrative about the best individuals in hsing-i goes something like this: they were forced to learn San Ti for one to three years before being permitted to learn anything else. San Ti cultivates five key processes, which include:
– the inhalation
– the lower legs and waist
– the limbs
– bringing together the practitioner’s exterior and interior relationships.
The first movement technique in the method is Hsing-Pi i’s Chuan (Chopping/Splitting Fist). It is related to the metal element and has a good effect on the lungs. Pi Chuan’s major goal is to strengthen the spine and make the hands as hard as steel.
