DescriptionAdolescents are sensitive, uncertain of themselves, and generally guarded when it comes to trusting and relating to others since they are intrinsically confused and chaotic developmental period. Most adolescent and tweens are not in therapy by choice, and they are rarely interested in discussing their thoughts or the difficulties adults have labeled as “problems,” especially with a stranger.
As a therapist, I find it difficult to engage kids and tweens who are visibly hurting yet are hesitant or unable to talk about it. At a time when adolescents and preteens need us more than ever to assist them navigate the numerous problems of familial, academic, and social life, the gap between clinical theory taught in graduate school and real-world practice is growing.
Play therapy provides a unique outlet for expression that respects these clients’ developmental level while giving words to their thoughts and feelings in a non-threatening way. You may help teenagers and tweens manage their emotions, gain self-regulation skills, enhance distress tolerance, and find themselves in a non-directive, safe environment by using the power of play.
Dr. Jennifer Lefebre, trauma specialist and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor (RPT-S), presents this tape full of innovative, effective play-based therapies that may be readily integrated into the work you are already doing.
Many of the clinical concerns these children face can be effectively treated through music, metaphors, art, dance, sandtrays, and other techniques, including:
Anxiety, trauma, and OCD are all symptoms of depression and mood disorders.
Low self-esteem, identity formation, self-injury, and trouble relating to others
Impatience and poor judgment, as well as difficulties accepting responsibility
