Although stock index futures have long been John Carter and Hubert Senters’ preferred market to trade, since the grain markets turned computerized in August 2006, they have been aggressively trading these (the “Ags”). The optimum time to trade Ags is between 9:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. CST, when the pit is open. During this time, electronic contracts trade alongside pit contracts. Because of the narrow time window, there are numerous significant breakout and breakdown moves for a trader to take advantage of. While the initial 30 minutes give a terrific “break” trade of the session’s highs or lows, the 1:15 p.m. closure also presents several trading chances as traders are compelled to cover their positions and go flat. “If I could only trade two markets,” John recently stated, “it would be stock index futures and Ags.”
When the stock markets are tumultuous and quiet, the agricultural markets provide extra trading chances. Furthermore, some traders do better in momentum markets—buying new highs and selling new lows. This method will backfire in stock index futures, which is a dying market. (Fading implies that subsequent lows are purchased rather than shorted, and so on.)
This DVD set was shot over the course of a two-day live presentation at the Chicago Board of Trade.
