My first job was selling $500 conferences for 500 Startups (the world’s most active venture fund and business accelerator).
I wondered how many people would pay $500 for a day in a dark hotel ballroom with a bunch of strangers.
We virtually always sold out.

Of course, you have to consider 500 Startups’ existing name in the tech community, but the truth is that 86% of our revenues originated from a somewhat large, yet engaged and devoted email list.
Nor social media, not sponsored advertising, but good old-fashioned email.
It wasn’t until I left 500 Startups, began my blog (yes, about email marketing – I know, I’m a geek), and then started a new position as the Head of Marketing at HACK Temple that I discovered how much work goes into developing an email list from beginning.
My next job required me to be a one-person team responsible for ALL demand-generation efforts, with a focus on creating a large email list.
The challenge piqued my interest, but the more I worked, the more I felt like there were a million things I wanted to accomplish but couldn’t since I was the only one.
Coming up with concepts to attract a large number of people was far more difficult than I had anticipated.
The broad picture (or strategy) continued sliding away from me as I was sucked into the day-to-day operations and details.
I’d be set if I could just find out how to create an automatic funnel that efficiently brought folks into my email list and then into the user base.
That’s what I accomplished after many trial and error. I eventually took a step back, looked at the big picture, and devised a step-by-step strategy for drawing more users to my product and turning them into paying customers.
