The “Dirty Little Secret” of a $100,000-a-year Copywriting Career
Are You Seeking Something More?
When I talk to copywriters, they always say the same thing.
It makes no difference if they’re just starting off…
Or if they’ve been in the game for more than 5 years.
They’re all saying,
“All I need is someone to assist me.”
There are dozens…if not hundreds…of books, courses, and individuals attempting to educate copywriting.
Some just teach a small portion, such as email copywriting or headlines.
Some claim to be able to teach newcomers…
However, those newcomers emerge with little more knowledge than when they began.
Some males have been teaching themselves for YEARS…reading books, purchasing courses, and attending events…
However, they are unsure if they have “got it” yet.
I see questions like, “Which ten (or three, or six, or one hundred) books should I read to understand copywriting?”
Alternatively, “Who is the finest individual to learn copywriting from?”
Well…
I believe you’ve discovered the solution. This is a private program that I’ve already done for over 30 people…
And they’ve all claimed it’s the BEST copywriting training they’ve ever taken.
But wait, I’m getting ahead of myself…
Let’s Begin at the Beginning…
Hello there, dear reader.
I’d like to share one of my “dirty little secrets” as a copywriter with you.
It’s about how I began writing copy.
Since 2009, I’d been “studying” copy. Purchasing courses, reading books, and attending seminars; the typical grind.
But it wasn’t until 2013 that I really WROTE anything substantial.
What has changed?
I recruited my first copywriting mentor in 2013.
“Hired” may be a bit of a misnomer…
In actuality, I pleaded with him to educate me.
I wrote him about a dozen emails, pinged him on Skype every day, and pushed him to take my money in order for him to train me.
Why did I bother him in such a way?
I was sick of being an Armchair Copywriter.
What exactly is a “Armchair Copywriter”?
Someone who has read a few books is referred to as an armchair copywriter (probably never finished them)
I purchased various classes (never made it past module 3)
And they’ve seen a LOT of VSLs and read a LOT of sales letters, so they consider themselves a “expert” in direct response copywriting.
They’re the type of folks that consistently give out Top 10 lists of copied books but have never purchased, read, or studied them.
I was among them.
I believed I understood everything until I hired my mentor, who convinced me that I was full of nonsense.
And he proved it once I handed in my first homework to him.
I was a jerk. Bad. Like, “College Sophomore Trying To Look Smart” terrible.
I was gnawed on. My work came out at a Flesch-Kincaid level of 14th grade, and it wasn’t because I was brilliant.
It was just clumsy. Unusable. Unreadable. Self-serving nonsense that couldn’t sell cheap crack to an addict.
But the agony didn’t end there.
In addition to my other responsibilities, I had to hand-copy a sales letter.
Every.
Every. Single. Day.
The traditional procedure. Very few people are capable of carrying it out.
But here’s the catch: if I missed even ONE day with my mentor, I had to submit all of the information he sent me to someone else. Another writer who desired it even more than I did.
And I wasn’t going to let that person win.
As a result, I wrote. Every day, for a number of hours. For a period of 60 days.
I went to India for a friend’s wedding and continued to write every day.
I went to a military training where I had to get up at 0445 every day and return home at 7pm every night, but I still wrote every day.
I also completed assignments. I authored emails, sales letters, VSLs, articles, and landing pages, to mention a few.
I also read. I read authors like as John Carlton, David Ogilvy, Dan Kennedy, Eugene Schwartz, Eben Pagan, Mike Dillard, and others. Modern and classic copywriters are worth billions of dollars in sales.
And, gradually, I stopped sucking so hard.
My first sales letter sold for $300. Then I added four more. Each one made 1500% of their initial investment. Some of them are still in use today. (almost 4 years later)
My emails began to get opened. My VSLs were seen. And, gradually but steadily, I advanced to the “Journeyman” level.
In May of 2016, I decided to make the same offer to a select number of folks.
Over the next few months, 17 new members joined my group.
