I leaped at the chance to be among the first to take Guy Windsor’s online course on recreating medieval swordsmanship using historical materials. I’d studied with Guy and knew he’d done a tremendous job over the last two decades researching genuine materials on historical swordsmanship and combat and using his studies to recreate fighting systems with various weapons, so I felt he understood what he was talking about here. I was interested in sword and buckler combat and wanted to learn more about the many sources and styles of sword and buckler fighting. My expectations were fulfilled and surpassed by the online course. It taught me how to approach and analyze the sources in a meaningful way, as well as how to put together a comprehensive system based on a source and, more importantly, how to build exercises and a syllabus to teach the system to others.

So far, I’ve taken the teachings from this course to create a core curriculum for an introduction to sword and buckler fighting, which I’ve taught to at least five other people. Furthermore, the course taught me how to approach the sources in a methodical and logical manner, so my understanding of the context in which the sources were written and the culture for which they were created has grown substantially.
