Several states, including Florida and Michigan, have begun to require pharmacists to complete human trafficking-related CME. Human trafficking is the unlawful transportation of persons, usually for the purpose of forced labor or sexual prostitution. Although not yet in effect in Minnesota, we might be close. The FBI ranked Minnesota as having the third-highest number of human trafficking cases, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. We are likely to have seen or will encounter these victims since pharmacy workers are routinely available to patients in the community. According to a 2014 research conducted by the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, around 88% of trafficking survivors reported receiving healthcare while being trafficked. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in the United States has begun to collaborate with healthcare professionals to provide training to spot both verbal and nonverbal indicators that a patient is in danger. This presentation will go over typical indications of human trafficking, screening questions that may be used to assess if a person is a victim, and resources that pharmacy employees can use. Because this is a major public health risk, it is critical that pharmacists and technicians obtain the same training as other healthcare professionals.
