DescriptionAmericans’ lifespan numbers have dropped by about ten years. We now live on an average of 69 instead of 78. Other affluent, developed countries continue to outlive US inhabitants in terms of life expectancy. Substance abuse, sexuality, and suicide are three concerns that may give crucial insights into our country’s number one public health problem: an addiction culture. Dr. Carnes takes us through the latest research on the genesis of addictions as well as the epigenetic influence of trauma and toxic stress. Cultural changes can also act as key accelerators. To comprehend the situation we are in and what is expected of us “on the front lines” of this fight, mental health practitioners must sift through the studies.
