Rachel Sager’s Intuitive Andamento
Have you ever been disappointed by the short, often one-word explanations used to explain the paths that mosaicists take? Do you wish to have a better knowledge of the miracles and intricacies that may occur inside the line? If you want to get more out of mosaic art than just moving pieces from point A to point B, this advanced session is for you! Listen to “The Forager Mosaicist” Rachel Sager as she breaks down andamento into bite-sized parts, shows you to “The Rules,” and takes some of the mystery out of hammer and hardie labor. Most significantly, she divulges some of her insights about the riddles that underpin intuitive, creative, and very personal andamento.
Rachel Sager’s Intuitive Andamento 2.0
Welcome to the follow-up course to Rachel Sager’s extremely successful “Intuitive Andamento.” Rachel takes students further in this online course, Intuitive Andamento 2.0, by teaching them how to employ distinctive and meticulously constructed lines for design composition. Rachel’s first Intuitive Andamento teaches how to draw lines, examines tesserae forms, explains cutting natural materials, and investigates how they all interact without making a design. Rachel’s first “Intuitive Andamento” course is recommended as a good starting point before taking this course, but it is not required. Rachel expands on the prior course with more information on applying her approach to produce a composition in this session. Imagine using your line creation talents and learning how to compose a composition if you were a student of Rachel’s first “Intuitive Andamento” class. You will not only learn about composition, but also about designing, working with and sourcing a range of materials, exploring color palettes, and utilising negative space in your design. Rachel will lead you further and deeper into your practice as a mosaic artist, whether you make your own substrates or buy them pre-cut. When you know more about Intuitive Andamento, you’ll start thinking about how the lines interact with each other and how your unique style might come to life.
These online courses are packed with knowledge and provide a downloadable PDF with all of the tools, documents, and resources you’ll need to get started right away!

Sager, Rachel
— Rachel Sager is an artist, a teacher, a speaker, and a writer. Rachel works on the cutting edge of the modern mosaic fine art movement; her creative work has been shown in cities across the United States and worldwide, and she has received several best of show awards in juried exhibits. Her Marcellus Shale Series is a genuine Pittsburgh success story, and her art is passionately collected by individual clients and companies worldwide. She applies these ancient approaches to the “now and now” of the contemporary American mosaic movement. Rachel is from the Appalachian foothills and is enthusiastic about preserving her storytelling, hillbilly origins as she weaves vivid tales of family, nature, self-reliance, comedy, and the legacy of coal through the lens of mosaic. Her quest to “construct the line” in mosaic continues to inspire new generations of mosaicists, whether she is digging into the ground of her native Pennsylvania or touring the world as a teacher and speaker.
