DescriptionIn the twenty-first century opioid epidemic, pain management is a critical battleground.
Because a history of mental illness and/or drug misuse is a major risk factor for opioid addiction, the clients we treat on a daily basis are more vulnerable to the dangerous trap of opioid reliance. With stories of opiate addiction and mortality on the rise, physicians and patients are actively looking for alternate pain management methods. Because of our expertise in the evaluation and treatment of mental diseases and addictions, behavioral health practitioners are particularly positioned to combat opioid addiction by teaching clients how to manage chronic pain without the use of drugs. However, many of us believe that we lack the necessary training and knowledge to meet the very real problems of treating clients who are in chronic pain.
Dr. Robert Umlauf, who has over 30 years of practical expertise in the treatment of physical pain, prepares you for effective practice with clients who are at danger of, or already in, the grip of opiate addiction. He will assist you in broadening your evaluation abilities to encompass the neurophysiological, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral variables that contribute to the development of chronic pain syndrome. You will learn how to apply specialized self-regulation and behavioral activation methods to assist any client better manage pain. Dr. Umlauf will also discuss current medical research, alternative medicines, the importance of food and nutrition, and evidence-based therapies that are beneficial. He teaches interdisciplinary methods to pain care through highly participatory, hands-on experiences.
