Tibetan massage: emotional healing to ease the body
Published at 18:39 on 12/12/2019
One of the most popular body treatments in the middle of an alternative medicine boom is so-called “therapeutic” massage. What is Tibetan massage unique? With pressure, friction, and ancient sounds, reconnect your body and mind to the tuning fork.
Originally, a belief: the power of sounds to rebalance energy. Singing bowls and ancient chants have been used to balance bodies… and spirits in Tibet for over 5000 years.
According to Vedic philosophy, each body has its own frequency, which is periodically disrupted by numerous emotional variables such as fear, tension, irritation, and so on. These emotions would have direct effects on the body, causing ills or “symptoms” to arise.
Tibetan therapeutic massage uses ancestral motions to activate the meridians in a mystical acoustic environment to ease them. Traditional pharmacopoeia plants and oils are also employed in these rituals, baths, or local application to empty the body and release emotions.
How’s the session going?
Seven lovely rooms spread across 500 m2 of zen space welcome city inhabitants seeking rest at the Tibetan health facility of Mount Kailash * near Paris.
Six practitioners were taught on the spot by Tetsen Wangmo, the founder of the Lhasa University Medical Center.
We are instantly calmed by the deep sounds that permeate the room while we lie on our stomachs, covered with a towel on a warm table.
The practitioner begins a tonic massage after immediately assessing the regions that require attention. Firm pressures, which can be uncomfortable depending on the degree of tension, are followed with kneading and friction, which seek to warm up and untie the body in order to induce muscular relaxation. From head to toe, the meridians related with the organs are stimulated! It’s “Traditional Tibetan Art,” a laborious massage done by Tibetan families who pass down the same motions from generation to generation.
Depending on the style of care chosen, the practitioner may also place tiny bags containing a blend of medicinal herbs crushed to powder and submerged in hot oil on certain regions of the body. It is the so-called “moxibustion” technique, which involves heating acupuncture sites. The meridians are then stimulated by a ceremonial massage. Produced in Tibet’s northern areas, this medication relieves pain and reduces bad feelings (anxiety, dizziness, sadness, etc.).
And what about the aftereffects?
One is fatigued yet the spirit is appeased. If a few aches emerge within 24 hours, they will go swiftly, giving place to a considerable energy increase. Muscles and joints are relaxed, and thoughts are lighter. Ommmm.
