Tito Ortiz, one of the most colorful and contentious fighters in Ultimate Fighting Championship history, discusses his journey from growing up as a bad boy in Huntington Beach to becoming a showman in front of 20,000 live spectators and 4 million television viewers.
He’s the ultimate showman in the world’s best spectator sport, a controversial, flamboyant personality who has ruled Ultimate Fighting as one of its most entertaining and skilled stars for more than 10 years.
But Tito Ortiz’s life almost took a different turn. Ortiz spent much of his youth in Huntington Beach, California, living in hotels and the backs of other people’s houses while his heroin-addicted parents were forced to leave one apartment after another. He had tried practically every drug available by the sixth grade, and his early years included time in juvenile prison camps, a succession of small offenses, and a spell with a local gang. Then, in high school, Tito found wrestling, which was the ideal sport for this rough, streetwise, and ambitious young man.
Tito made his MMA debut in 1997 at UFC 13, winning his first bout in twenty-two seconds. He was picked as a light heavyweight contender in UFC 25 in 2000 and won the championship, which he successfully defended five times over the next three years.
Tito Ortiz does not hold back as he recounts his journey from Huntington Beach Bad Boy to UFC superstardom—his difficult upbringing, his first marriage and fidelity struggles, his battles with the UFC, his career highs and lows, and his current happy relationship with former porn star Jenna Jameson. This Is Gonna Hurt is a raw, candid, hilarious, and fearless look at what it takes to win in the world’s most violent arena. It’s an uplifting narrative about defeating the odds and an extraordinary look at what it takes to win in the world’s most brutal arena.
