The webinar will provide you with an update on the election results and what they mean for Social Security in the 116th Congress, what is happening or has happened in the 115th Congress’s lame duck session, the most recent information on the status of Fiscal Year 2019 appropriations, and an update on Andrew Saul’s nomination as Commissioner of SSA. The webinar will also include information about the proposed rule “Setting the Manner for the Appearance of Parties and Witnesses at Hearings,” SSA’s plan to reinstate reconsideration in the prototype states, ALJ issues (including implementation of the Executive Order on ALJ hiring, Lucia and SSA ALJ hiring plans), and implementation of the CARES backlog reduction plan.
Lisa Ekman is the Director of Government Affairs at NOSSCR. She has over 16 years of experience working to improve economic security for people with disabilities, with a focus on SSDI and SSI, Medicare and Medicaid, employment programs, and long-term services and supports. She began her disability policy career at the Social Security Administration as a Presidential Management Intern, where she worked on the development and implementation of the Ticket to Work Program. She has served on the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Advisory Panels, as well as as a disability policy advisor to Senators Edward M. Kennedy, Tom Harkin, and James Jeffords of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee. She returned to school to earn her law degree after working as a Senior Policy Analyst in Legislative Affairs for the Association of University Centers on Disabilities. She previously worked as the Director of Federal Policy for Health & Disability Advocates before joining NOSSCR. She has also advised NOSSCR, the American Association of People with Disabilities, Axiom Resource Management, the Consortium for Citizens with Disabilities, and the National Academy of Social Insurance on disability policy. Ekman earned a J.D. with honors from Georgetown University, a Masters in Social Work from the University of Denver, and a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Northwestern University.
