Thomas Joiner suggests three variables that characterize people most at risk of suicide in his theory of suicidal behavior: the sensation of being a burden on loved ones, the experience of solitude, and, perhaps most chillingly, the partly hereditary and partly acquired ability to injure oneself. He puts the idea to the test using clinical anecdotes, epidemiology, genetics, and neuroscience, with consequences for the entire range of therapeutic activities connected to suicidality.
Thomas Joiner attended Princeton University and earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. He holds the Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professorship in Psychology at Florida State University (FSU). Dr. Joiner’s research focuses on the psychology, neuroscience, and therapy of suicidal behavior and other mental illnesses. Dr. Joiner is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Suicide & Life-Threatening Behavior and the author of over 750 peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Joiner has written or edited 18 books, including Why People Suicide, Myths About Suicide, and Mindlessness: The Corruption of Mindfulness in a Narcissistic Culture. Dr. Joiner has made several media appearances in conjunction with his writings, including two appearances on the Dr. Phil program. Dr. Joiner has also received several accolades, most notably the 2020 James McKeen Cattell Award for lifelong achievements to applied psychology research. Dr. Joiner is also a NASA Human Research Program consultant and the Director of a Military Suicide Research Consortium. He has a part-time therapeutic and consulting firm that specializes on suicidal behavior, among other things, and provides legal counsel in cases involving suicide deaths.
